Friso Kramer LED | A classic Dutch design

The Friso Kramer LED is a typical example of classic Dutch design combined with today’s innovative technology. Lightwell, a leading manufacturer of LED-lights, asked Kramer – the man responsible for the design of the inverted-cone streetlamp that has dominated the streets of the Netherlands since its appearance in the 1960’s – to update the product for use with the company’s LEDS.

Kramer’s new design meets all requirements of today’s so-called smart city technology, thus proving that cutting-edge high-tech developments can also be used to create attractive designs. A smart city is one in which social and technological solutions provide accelerated and sustainable economic growth.

INNOVATIVE LIGHTING SOLUTIONS

So the light from this lamp doesn’t shine into the first floor of the adjacent building but through the keyhole of the main entrance.’ Although Lightwell has had years of experience in the development of innovative lighting solutions, the collaboration with Friso Kramer marks the company’s big breakthrough. It’s his expertise in both form and technique that led to the integration of modern technology into lighting for public space. The realization of the Friso Kramer LED is a large part of Lightwell’s success; currently the firm is the biggest supplier of public lighting in Rotterdam, a municipality recognized worldwide for its trailblazing roll-out of smart city technology. Kramer’s new design has also been embraced by various other cities, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Lightwell supports this concept in its position as a forerunner in the development of products for public space that are both sustainable and technically advanced. The Dutch designer’s new streetlamp offers the latest technology captured in an aesthetic form, a fusion of parts that relies on style as well as top-notch engineering, whereby light is dispersed indirectly through a system of mirrors. A motion radar sensor automatically adjusts the intensity of light to the volume of traffic on the street. ‘It’s a lamppost. I want it to be as attractive as possible, says Kramer, ‘but it also has to operate correctly’.
